Some weeks past a call was issued by Infantry for a convention of the Stale membera of the Wilmington Light Guard, to meet at Raleigh, prepare a billforthoaidof troopa of the State, See. Yesterday afternoon the conven tion met in the Mayor's office. The aU tendance was very large, nearly every company in the State, both white and colored, being represented. The meeting was called to order by Capt E R Tage, of Gen Hancock's staffs who called Capt John L Cantwellof tho Wilmington Li3ht Indfantry, to the chair. In a few neatly turned phrases Capt. Cantwell congratulated tho j co i vention upon the large attendance and J the spirit manifested. . . A commitee on permanent organiza tion was appointed, which rpported the following permanent officers. Presi dent, Gen Johnstone Jones; vice presi dents, Capt A J Ellington, of Reids villejrMaj EF McRea, ot Shoe Heel; secretaries, Capt Thos Parker, of ShIs bury ; Lt K F Smith aod H H Roberts, Raleigh. Gen Jonesj on taking the chair, made an excellent speech in which he review ed the good work done by the tate Guard since Its organization in 1877, whenever it had been called on- He felt snre the Legislature recognized the fact that the Guard should be aided bv the State. A State institution., (Or ganized under the constitution, and ;for rState purposes, it mnst be aided by the State. Events had clearly shown the necesity ol the organization. To provide for an annual encamp ment of tho Guard fr a period of six 8.1 A grant to each company of $5 ner annum for each active member thereof to be made, said sum to , be paid into the treasury of the company to constitute a fund for the rent of ar uiory and other necessary expenses. 3. That there bo attached to the of fice of the Adjutant General a reasona ble compensation. . Tho resolutions were adopted. Capt Nash moved that each eompany forward to the General Assembly peti tions sighed by the tax payers of each county in which there is a company, unrinc that the General Assembly pass the bill for the aid of the State ttuard Accepted. Capt Cantwell. Cot II P Jones and Maj E F McRae were appointed & com mittee to wait on he' Governor and re quest his presence at the hall. The Governor appeared and made some - re marks in his usual good taste and with vigor.' He said the Guard was, in his opinion, a necessity ; that it usheld law and order; that it had a ways done its duty to the State and the State wonld fail in its duty if it did not make reasonable appropriation for its proper maintenance. In the name of the patriotic people of the State he thanked the Guara for its- patriotism in repre senting the -State so well at Yorktown. - Thn finfh was received with cheers. Ellington, of Reidsville, who was one of the delegates in atten dance at the military convention held in Raleigh yesterday, is in the city and is registereir'at the Purcell nouse. 'The Soldiers .Return." - .... ... i Tho delegation from the Wilmington Light Infantry, who left here; yester day morning to attend the military convention at Raleigh returned safe and sound this morning, having been absent from thev city -about 24 hours. They speak very pleasantly of their trip and return very well satisfied that the object of their mission will be attained. Tho session of the convention, as we predicted vas brief, but there was time enough - for considerable discus sion and for perfecting plans of opera tion in order to accomplish the needed legislation. You can get all sizes lowest prices. - and at the Rumor Corrected, A report has recently appearedi in several newspapers that the contem plated line of railroad from Wilson to Florence had been survejed the entire rontc, that the engineers hail made their report and that work upon the road would beNcommenced in the course ot a couple of months. This, we are aware, is a ii3take. The survey is not half completed. , It has been begun and the engineers have made considerable progress, but owing to the wet weather and other causes, work has been sifs- pendedjbrthe present. It will proba bly be renewed in the Spring, when it will be pushed to completion. - I . 1 . TheTsdutf lern Ore Company Quite a number of the business men of this city and vicinity made a 'visit yesterday to tlife establishment'ot the Southern Ore Co.. which isiocated in the southern portion oi - the city. They were received by Messrs. Reuo, chief of the firm. Reese, the metallurgist. and Bear the" assistant. These gentlemen explained to their visitors the process i by which the ore was rednccd and the vMueof tho metals determined. The works are now in complete working order, and the visiting gentlemen ex- ! - I pressed themselves as well-pleased with all they saw. and as entirely satisfied as rcgardsjthe feasibility of the enterprise the Southern Ore Company has under taken.
